About this course

Studying three modern languages at university level is an exceptional intellectual undertaking. French, Russian, and Spanish span distinct language families, cultural traditions, and geopolitical spheres, and pursuing all three together produces a graduate with a genuinely rare combination of linguistic range and cultural insight. Each language opens a different world: French carries with it a rich Francophone literary and intellectual tradition; Russian unlocks one of the great literary cultures alongside the political and historical reality of the world's largest country; Spanish provides access to the Iberian world and to the hundreds of millions of speakers across Latin America.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) degree develops all three languages to a high level of proficiency, combining language work with the study of literature, film, history, and culture in each tradition. You will engage with primary texts and secondary scholarship in French, Russian, and Spanish, developing the analytical and interpretive skills that advanced language study demands. A year abroad is built into the programme, and for a triple language degree this experience is particularly significant, giving you time in an immersive environment that accelerates your fluency and deepens your understanding of living culture in one or more of your languages.

Graduates from triple language programmes are sought after in almost every sector that operates across borders. Careers in international diplomacy, the European institutions, international law, finance, journalism, translation, interpreting, and international development all draw on exactly the combination of precision, cultural literacy, and communication this degree builds. Teaching is also a strong pathway, both in the UK and abroad.

Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in translation, language teaching, area studies, or linguistics, extending their expertise in directions that suit their professional ambitions.

Would do it again
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On t…

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy t…
