About this course

French and history is a combination that allows you to develop genuine linguistic and cultural expertise in the French-speaking world while also building the analytical and research skills that historical study demands. French is a major world language, spoken across Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond, carrying with it a literary tradition, a philosophical heritage, and a contemporary political and cultural significance that rewards serious scholarly engagement. History, studied alongside French, gives you the tools to understand how societies and cultures have changed over time, how power has been exercised and contested, and how past events continue to shape the present.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme gives you the freedom to pursue the historical periods and themes that matter most to you, from medieval France through to contemporary European and world history, while also developing your French across all its dimensions: language, literature, society, and culture. You will have the opportunity to focus on topics as varied as French comics, song, travel writing, and contemporary history, reflecting the richness and breadth of French cultural production. A sandwich year in industry and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you direct professional experience, possibly in a French-speaking environment, before you graduate.

With a typical entry tariff of 200 UCAS points, this degree attracts highly motivated students with both linguistic ability and a passion for ideas. Graduates pursue careers in diplomacy, international organisations, journalism, teaching, publishing, heritage, the civil service, law, and a wide range of roles in which French language skills and analytical thinking are both valuable. The combination is particularly well suited to careers involving France and the wider francophone world.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in French, European history, modern languages, or international relations, and some pursue research careers or teaching qualifications.

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit other UK cities at weekends.…
