About this course

Gaelic and German is a combination of two languages that stand far apart in terms of their current global reach but share deep significance in the cultures they represent. Scottish Gaelic is one of the oldest living languages in Britain, with a rich literary tradition stretching back over a thousand years and a living contemporary culture sustained by communities in the Western Isles and beyond. German is one of Europe's most important languages, the native tongue of more than 90 million people and the language of one of the world's leading economies and cultural traditions.

Studying both develops a distinctive profile: deep engagement with a minority Celtic language and the cultural world it carries alongside fluency in a major European language of international professional relevance.

At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme, which includes a sandwich year placement and a work placement, develops your competence in both languages and your critical understanding of both cultures. You will study the history and development of Gaelic from its origins to the present day, developing your reading and speaking proficiency alongside your knowledge of Gaelic literature, music, history and culture. The German component develops your language skills across all registers, from professional communication to literary and cultural analysis, and deepens your understanding of German-speaking societies past and present.

The sandwich year placement and work placement give you professional experience that may be in Gaelic-related contexts, German-speaking environments, or roles where both language skills are relevant.

You will develop linguistic and analytical competences in two very different languages, alongside the cross-cultural understanding that real language study always produces.

Graduates move into Gaelic broadcasting, education and cultural development, translation, government and public service in Scotland, international business, journalism, and a wide range of roles where either Gaelic or German skills, or both, are valued. Postgraduate study in Celtic languages, German, or linguistics is a natural pathway.

Genuinely worthwhile
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brillian…

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of livin…
