Global Sustainable Development

Global sustainable development brings together the social, environmental, and economic dimensions of the defining challenge of our era. As climate change, inequality, food security, and resource pressures reshape societies around the world, the demand for graduates who can think systematically across disciplines and translate that thinking into practical action has grown sharply. This is a field that draws on geography, economics, ecology, politics, and development studies, asking both analytical and ethical questions about how the world is changing and what can be done.

At Reading this three-year full-time programme draws expertise from across the university, allowing you to specialise in the areas of sustainable development that interest you most, whether that is climate change and environment, governance and policy, food systems, or international development. The programme is genuinely interdisciplinary, training you to think across the silos that often separate academic disciplines and professional fields. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement are all part of the programme, giving you substantial experience of global development in professional and international settings before you graduate.

The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points.

Graduates from global sustainable development programmes go on to careers in international organisations, NGOs, government departments, environmental consultancies, development finance, and the private sector's growing sustainability functions. The United Nations, World Bank, international charities, and national environment agencies are common employers. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in areas such as international development, environmental policy, or sustainability management.
