Greek/ Theatre Studies

Greek and theatre studies is a combination that places one of the world's oldest and richest literary traditions alongside the contemporary study of performance, giving you both the linguistic tools to engage with ancient texts in their original language and the critical frameworks to understand theatre as a living art form. Classical Greek is the language of Homer and the other Greek poets, of the Athenian tragedies and comedies that are among the foundational works of Western literature, of orators and historians, and of philosophers including Plato and Aristotle. Theatre studies brings these ancient texts into dialogue with contemporary performance theory, practice, and history, asking how performance works, what it does for its audiences, and how the theatrical traditions of the Greeks have shaped the stage ever since.

At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme gives you the opportunity to develop a serious engagement with both disciplines, reading Greek texts in the original and engaging with the political and social history, philosophy, religion, and art of ancient Greece, while also developing your understanding of theatre across periods and cultures. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to extend your studies in another educational context. Glasgow's strong classics and theatre departments both offer expert teaching and active research communities that enrich the academic environment for students in this combination.

Graduates of classical and theatre combinations pursue careers in teaching, academic research, theatre and performance, heritage and classical education, journalism, publishing, arts management, cultural policy, and the many professions that value the close reading, analytical writing, and critical thinking that these disciplines develop. Some continue to postgraduate study in classical languages, ancient history, theatre studies, or drama, building on the undergraduate foundation toward research or professional theatre careers.
