About this course

History is the discipline that explains how the world came to be as it is, tracing the events, structures, ideas, and relationships that have shaped human societies across time. From the fall of ancient empires to the making of the modern state, from the history of slavery to the politics of the Cold War, history invites you to engage with evidence from the past in order to understand the present. It develops close reading, careful argument, and the ability to evaluate competing interpretations, skills that are valued far beyond the discipline itself.

Teesside University's four-year full-time History with Foundation Year degree has a typical entry tariff of 72 points and is designed to make higher education accessible to students from a range of backgrounds. The foundation year introduces you to the historical and contemporary development of social science disciplines, explores how research is practically applied in society, and develops the academic skills and personal confidence needed for degree-level study, as the course itself notes. It also gives you an understanding of both similarities and differences between disciplines and how interdisciplinary collaboration works in practice.

Following the foundation year, you will study history across different periods, regions, and themes, developing both breadth of historical knowledge and depth of analytical skill.

History graduates work in education, journalism, the civil service, law, heritage and museums, archives, politics, broadcasting, public policy, and publishing. The research, analytical, and communication skills the discipline develops transfer across virtually any profession that values careful thinking and evidence-based argument. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in history, archives, heritage management, or related fields, while others proceed to teacher training, law conversion, or professional qualifications in areas where historical and analytical skills are directly applicable.
