Interior Architecture and Design

Interior architecture and design is the art and science of shaping the spaces people inhabit. It goes beyond decoration to consider how light, material, structure, proportion, and circulation together create environments that are functional, aesthetically compelling, and responsive to the people who use them. Interior architects work at the interface of architecture and design, often transforming existing buildings and structures into spaces with new purposes, and their work encompasses residential, commercial, hospitality, retail, cultural, and healthcare environments.

At Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme develops your understanding of the creative design process and equips you to create functional and sustainable interior environments. You will work through studio projects that develop your spatial thinking, your technical knowledge of materials and construction, and your ability to communicate design ideas through drawing, modelling, and digital representation. The curriculum covers the history and theory of interior design, environmental sustainability, building systems, and client-facing professional practice, giving you a grounding that is both creative and technically rigorous.

Graduates of interior architecture and design go on to work in interior design studios, architectural practices, property development, hospitality design, retail and exhibition design, and set design for film and television. Some establish independent practices or move into related fields such as furniture design, product design, or spatial branding. Postgraduate study and continuing professional development are well-supported routes for those who wish to specialise or take on leadership roles within the industry.
