About this course

Interior architecture occupies the space between architecture and interior design, addressing the transformation of existing buildings and the design of new interior environments with an emphasis on spatial quality, structural thinking, and cultural meaning. Interior architects remodel, adapt, and reimagine internal spaces, working with the existing building fabric as both a constraint and a resource, and designing interiors that respond to how people move through, inhabit, and experience built space. The discipline requires both creative vision and technical literacy, including knowledge of structure, materials, building regulations, and construction processes.

At Middlesex University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year that provides a supported entry into degree-level design study, giving you additional preparation before you progress to the main programme. You will develop your creative and practical skills in spatial design, technical drawing, digital modelling, material specification, and project management, working through studio projects that build from initial concept through to resolved design proposals. You will learn to think and work like a designer alongside fellow creative practitioners, developing both your individual design voice and the collaborative skills that professional practice demands.

A sandwich year in industry and work placements are also part of the programme, giving you direct experience in interior architecture or design settings before graduation.

With a typical entry tariff of 88 UCAS points, this degree is accessible to students who have creative ability and the commitment to develop it. Graduates work as interior architects and designers in architectural practices, design studios, property developers, retail and hospitality businesses, and public sector organisations. Some establish independent practices, while others move into related areas including exhibition design, retail design, set design, and sustainable refurbishment.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in interior design, architecture, or spatial design.
