About this course

Latin American Studies with Business Management is a combination that recognises the growing economic and cultural significance of Latin America and the practical value of understanding it deeply. Latin America is home to some of the world's fastest-growing economies, some of its greatest environmental challenges, a rich diversity of indigenous peoples, and cultural traditions of extraordinary depth and variety. Studying it alongside business management gives you both the area expertise and the commercial skills to engage with this region professionally.

At the University of Essex, this four-year full-time programme develops your understanding of Latin American history, politics, culture, and society alongside core business management disciplines. The Latin American studies strand will take you into the literature, film, politics, and social dynamics of the region, developing fluency in Spanish and/or Portuguese as well as analytical knowledge of the complex forces shaping Latin American societies. The business management strand equips you with competencies in strategy, marketing, organisational behaviour, and management theory that are directly applicable in commercial and non-commercial organisations.

Together, the two subjects prepare you for the complexities of working in or with Latin American markets, governments, and civil society organisations.

Graduates of this programme are well placed for careers in international business, trade, diplomacy, NGO and development work, journalism, cultural institutions, and government departments with Latin American responsibilities. The combination of deep regional knowledge, language skills, and business competencies is distinctive and valued in organisations that operate in or engage with the Latin American sphere. Postgraduate study in Latin American studies, international business, development studies, or an MBA is a natural route for those who wish to develop their expertise further.

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the accounting and finance streams are taught by practitioners, not just academics. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” good transport links…
