About this course

Law is concerned with the rules that govern how people, organisations, and states interact and with how those rules are made, interpreted, and enforced. Studying law is not simply about memorising legislation; it is about developing a particular way of thinking, one that is precise, evidence-based, and alert to the competing interests and values that underpin legal decisions. It is a discipline that sits at the intersection of logic and ethics, language and power.

At Birmingham City University, this three-year full-time LLB Law degree is designed to combine academic legal study with practical, skills-based learning. You will work through the core areas of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, constitutional and administrative law, land law, and equity and trusts, building the doctrinal foundations that the legal profession requires. Alongside this, the course emphasises the development of practical legal skills such as legal research, drafting, mooting, and client interaction, preparing you for the realities of legal practice.

A placement or work experience year is available, giving you direct exposure to the legal sector before you graduate.

You will learn to read cases and statutes carefully, to construct and critique legal arguments, and to understand how law operates in practice as well as in theory. Birmingham City University's approach ensures that legal education is connected to the contemporary challenges facing the profession, from access to justice to the impact of technology on legal services.

This degree satisfies the academic stage of training for both solicitors and barristers in England and Wales, making it a recognised first step on the path to qualification. Beyond the legal profession itself, law graduates are sought after in business, finance, the civil service, public policy, compliance, and human resources, wherever precise thinking and an understanding of rules and risk are valued. Postgraduate study, including the Solicitors Qualifying Examination preparation or an LLM, is also a common route.

This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city …

This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the staff include practising barristers and solicitors who bring real-world context. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city —…
