About this course

Law governs the frameworks within which individuals, organisations, and states relate to one another, and its study trains you to think with precision, to construct arguments from evidence, and to navigate complex systems of rules and principles. A senior status or graduate entry law degree compresses the undergraduate LLB into an accelerated format designed for people who already hold a degree in another discipline, allowing you to bring the intellectual maturity and research skills of prior study to the rigours of legal training.

At the University of York, this two-year full-time programme leads to an LLB recognised as a Qualifying Law Degree in England and Wales, placing you firmly on the path to legal practice. The course covers the full range of foundational legal subjects alongside more specialist areas, and you will develop the capacity for close legal reasoning, statutory interpretation, and case analysis that professional legal work demands. The programme includes a sandwich year placement and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to gain professional legal experience and to develop comparative legal knowledge in an international setting.

Work placement opportunities are also built into the course, meaning you will graduate with both academic qualification and practical exposure to the legal world.

Graduates of this programme are well placed to continue to professional legal qualifications, including the Solicitor Qualifying Examination for those wishing to qualify as solicitors, or the Bar Training Course for those pursuing a career at the Bar. The degree also opens routes into legal careers in other jurisdictions, including Canada, as noted in the programme's international profile. Beyond legal practice, a law degree provides strong foundations for careers in the civil service, financial regulation, compliance, human resources, politics, journalism, and public policy.

Postgraduate study in specialist areas of law, or in related fields such as criminology or international relations, is also a natural progression.

Would do it again
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship one…
