About this course

Law with legal practice is a degree designed to develop both academic legal understanding and the practical professional skills needed to work in the legal sector. While a standard law degree focuses primarily on doctrinal knowledge and legal reasoning, a legal practice-focused programme adds explicit training in the skills that legal professionals use every day: drafting, advocacy, client interviewing, negotiation, and case management. This combination means you graduate as a more rounded and work-ready legal professional.

At the University of Portsmouth, this LLB is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, and its CILEX-aligned modules mean you can start your career having already completed industry qualifications that open a recognised route into the legal profession alongside the traditional solicitor and barrister paths. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing extensive professional and international experience. You will study the foundation subjects of English law, including contract, tort, criminal law, equity, constitutional, and European law, alongside the practical legal skills that prepare you for employment in legal practice.

The CILEX accreditation is particularly significant because it creates an alternative professional pathway for graduates who may not want to pursue the traditional training contract route, widening your options upon graduation.

Graduates are well prepared for training contracts, the Solicitor Qualifying Examination, the Legal Practice Course, or the CILEX professional qualification route. Many go directly into employment in solicitors' firms, legal executive practices, the courts service, or in-house legal teams. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in law.
