About this course

Management and modern history is a combination that places the practical study of how organisations work in dialogue with the disciplined analysis of how the world got to be as it is. Management introduces you to a variety of organisations across all sectors of the economy and teaches techniques specific to the discipline, including marketing, organisational behaviour, and financial analysis, while also developing the interpersonal skills of problem solving, critical thinking, and self-reliance that make effective managers. History demands the careful evaluation of evidence, the ability to construct and sustain arguments about complex events and processes, and the intellectual humility to acknowledge uncertainty.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme follows the Scottish MA pattern, allowing for breadth in the early years and depth in the later ones. It includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study management and history in a different academic and national context. With a typical entry tariff of 200 points, the programme is highly selective and attracts students who combine genuine intellectual ambition with practical commercial curiosity.

St Andrews' strong management school and its internationally recognised history department provide an excellent environment for this combination.

You will develop skills in business analysis, strategy, financial understanding, and organisational thinking alongside historical research, primary source evaluation, and analytical writing. The combination is well suited to careers that demand both the rigour of historical thinking and the practical orientation of management training.

Graduates from management and modern history programmes go on to careers in general management, consulting, finance, public policy, civil service, heritage, journalism, publishing, and international organisations. Many pursue postgraduate study in business, management, history, or public policy. St Andrews' strong alumni networks add value for those entering competitive professional fields.
