About this course

Marketing sits at the intersection of psychology, data, creativity and commercial strategy. Understanding what people want, how they make decisions, and how organisations can communicate and deliver value is a discipline that shapes everything from global brand campaigns to product development and digital strategy. Marketing management extends this into leadership territory, asking how you build, coordinate and evaluate marketing functions within a business context.

At the University of Essex, you will develop the analytical and creative capabilities needed to succeed in this field. You will explore consumer behaviour, market research, brand management, digital and social media marketing, pricing strategy and campaign planning. Management modules introduce you to organisational dynamics, leadership thinking and the broader strategic environment in which marketing decisions are made.

You will combine originality with the ability to interrogate data, interpret trends and translate insights into effective action, even under pressure. The programme challenges you to think rigorously about problems rather than simply applying templates, developing the kind of adaptive thinking that is genuinely useful in dynamic commercial environments.

A significant part of the learning draws on current industry practice. You will examine real cases, work with market data and explore the ethical dimensions of marketing, including questions about targeting, data use and commercial influence. Essex's location in the East of England places you within reach of London's media and marketing industries, and the full-time three-year structure gives you time to build practical skills through projects and collaborative work.

Graduates move into a broad range of careers including brand management, digital marketing, market research, advertising, product management, public relations and communications. The management dimension of the programme also opens pathways into general commercial and business roles where marketing literacy is increasingly valued. Further study in marketing, business analytics or management is a natural next step for those who want to specialise further or move into senior leadership.

Genuinely worthwhile
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” g…

Would I choose it again? Probably yes, with caveats. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit other UK cit…
