About this course

Mathematics and Philosophy is a degree that brings together two of the most ancient and rigorous intellectual traditions, exploring the profound connections between them. Mathematics and philosophy have been deeply intertwined throughout their histories: what are numbers, and do they exist? What is the nature of mathematical proof, and why does abstract mathematics so often describe the physical world?

These philosophical questions are not merely decorative concerns attached to mathematics but fundamental issues about the nature of knowledge, truth and reality. Conversely, some of the greatest philosophers, including Descartes, Leibniz, Frege and Russell, have been mathematicians, and the formalisation of logic has transformed both disciplines.

At the University of Liverpool, this full-time three-year programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities. You will study mathematical analysis, algebra, probability and statistics alongside the major areas of philosophy, including ethics, metaphysics, epistemology and logic, developing both the formal reasoning skills of mathematics and the broader analytical and argumentative capabilities of philosophy. The year abroad deepens your intellectual perspective significantly, while the placement year connects your academic skills to professional contexts.

Mathematics and Philosophy graduates carry a remarkably powerful analytical toolkit into a wide range of careers. Finance, technology, data science, management consultancy, the civil service, law, academia and research are all natural destinations. The combination of mathematical rigour with the breadth of philosophical reasoning is particularly valued in roles that require both formal precision and the capacity to engage with complex conceptual questions.

Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in mathematics, philosophy, logic, artificial intelligence or related fields, building specialist expertise that supports academic and research careers.
