About this course

Mathematics is the study of structure, pattern, and logical reasoning, a discipline of extraordinary precision and depth that provides the language and the tools for understanding everything from the behaviour of elementary particles to the dynamics of financial markets. Pure mathematics explores the properties of abstract mathematical objects, driven by the internal logic and beauty of the discipline, while applied mathematics brings mathematical methods to bear on problems in science, engineering, and other fields.

At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough and rigorous mathematical education that develops your ability to construct precise arguments, identify underlying structure, and apply mathematical tools across a range of contexts. You will study analysis, algebra, probability, statistics, and further pure and applied topics, developing both the conceptual understanding and the technical fluency that mathematics demands. The programme is designed to develop strong mathematical thinkers who can also communicate their reasoning clearly, which is a skill valued in almost every professional context where analytical work is required.

The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points. The programme can also be extended to include a placement year or year abroad if you wish to add professional or international experience.

Graduates from mathematics programmes go on to careers in finance, actuarial science, data science, software engineering, academic research, the civil service, cryptography, and teaching. The analytical rigour and logical precision that mathematics develops are valued across a very wide range of professional contexts. Further study options include postgraduate degrees in mathematics, statistics, financial mathematics, and data science.

A great decision
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you share a…

Exceeded expectations
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of living is…
