About this course

Medicinal chemistry is the branch of chemistry devoted to the discovery and development of compounds that have therapeutic value in medicine. It combines the synthesis and characterisation skills of organic chemistry with biological and pharmacological knowledge, asking how the three-dimensional shape and electronic properties of a molecule determine whether it will bind to a target protein, enter cells, survive metabolism, and produce a desired effect without causing unacceptable harm. It is a discipline at the frontier of pharmaceutical science, and one in which fundamental chemical understanding connects directly to the development of medicines that save and improve lives.

At the University of Liverpool, you will study Medicinal Chemistry over three years, full time, with a year abroad built into the programme. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in an internationally leading chemistry or pharmaceutical sciences environment, developing both your scientific knowledge and your awareness of how drug discovery is conducted in different national contexts. You will develop rigorous skills in organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, and the characterisation of molecular structure, alongside knowledge of pharmacology, drug design principles, molecular modelling, and the ADMET properties (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity) that determine a drug candidate's clinical viability.

The degree also introduces the regulatory and commercial frameworks within which drug development takes place.

Graduates of medicinal chemistry are highly sought after in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, in roles spanning medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, analytical chemistry, process chemistry, and regulatory affairs. The year abroad can be a significant asset in the graduate job market, particularly for roles with international companies or in European research institutes. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study, including doctoral research in medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, and pharmacology, and a doctorate is the standard entry point for senior research roles in the pharmaceutical industry.
