About this course

Modern languages combined with translation and interpretation studies is a degree designed for those who want to achieve high-level proficiency in languages and to develop the specialist professional skills of translating and interpreting, skills that are in consistent professional demand and that serve some of the most important communication needs in a globalised world. Translation involves rendering written text from one language into another with accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and stylistic appropriateness. Interpretation involves the oral transfer of meaning in real time, whether consecutively or simultaneously, in settings from international conferences to legal proceedings and medical consultations.

Both require deep bilingual competence, cultural knowledge, and rigorous professional training.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme is an applied degree designed to meet the needs of future translators and interpreters. You will develop a high level of proficiency in two languages, combining linguistic study with practical translation and interpretation training and with a period of residence abroad that further develops your understanding and fluency in your chosen languages. The year abroad is integral to the programme, recognising that genuine bilingual competence can only be achieved through sustained immersive experience in the language environment.

With a typical entry tariff of 184 UCAS points, this is a serious and competitive programme that prepares graduates directly for professional linguistic careers. Graduates work as translators and interpreters in legal, medical, diplomatic, commercial, and literary contexts, for international organisations, government bodies, language service providers, and as freelancers. They also pursue careers in international business, the foreign office and diplomatic service, journalism, publishing, education, and any profession where bilingual and cross-cultural communication is valued.

Many continue to postgraduate study in translation, interpretation, or related language disciplines.
