About this course

Arabic, Italian, and management is a triple combination that connects two of the world's significant and culturally rich languages with the practical discipline of running organisations. Arabic is the primary language of the Middle East and North Africa, one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and central to understanding one of the most geopolitically significant regions in the world. Italian carries one of the richest literary and artistic traditions in European history, and is spoken across Italy and in Italian-speaking communities globally.

Management provides the conceptual and practical tools to understand how organisations are led, how strategies are formed, and how people, resources, and systems are coordinated to achieve goals.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) programme includes a year abroad, which is a central component of any serious language degree. The year abroad gives you sustained immersion in one or more of your target languages and cultures, deepening linguistic competence and cultural understanding in ways that classroom study cannot fully replicate. You will develop your language skills in both Arabic and Italian, engage with the literatures, histories, and cultures of the Arabic-speaking and Italian-speaking worlds, and study management content covering strategy, organisational behaviour, finance, and leadership.

You will develop linguistic fluency, cross-cultural competence, strategic and analytical thinking, and the ability to communicate effectively across languages and business contexts. The combination is genuinely distinctive in the graduate market.

Graduates from modern languages and management programmes pursue careers in international business, diplomacy, management consultancy, the foreign service, international organisations, translation, and sectors with strong Middle Eastern or Italian connections. Postgraduate study in languages, management, international business, or area studies is a natural continuation.

Would do it again
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the consulting projects with real companies genuinely prepare you for the working world. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discuss…

Highly recommend
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the cit…
