About this course

Modern languages and management is a combination that reflects the realities of doing business in a multilingual world. French and German are two of the most important languages in global commerce, diplomacy and culture. France is a leading European economy and a major player in international institutions, while Germany is Europe's largest economy and a powerhouse of engineering, manufacturing and finance.

Combining proficiency in both languages with management training prepares you for international careers that demand cultural intelligence alongside commercial and organisational capability.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, which is an indispensable element of any serious languages degree. You will develop your French and German to a high level of proficiency through language study, literary and cultural analysis, and engagement with Francophone and German-speaking contexts. The management strand introduces you to strategy, organisational behaviour, finance, marketing and the principles of leading and coordinating people and organisations.

Together these strands develop communication skills in multiple languages alongside the commercial and strategic thinking of a management education.

You will study literature, linguistics and culture in both French and German, giving you the cultural depth to operate confidently in professional environments across both language communities. The management modules develop analytical and leadership capabilities that are directly relevant to careers in international organisations, firms and institutions.

Graduates go on to careers in international business, finance, diplomacy, the European institutions, consulting, law, media, cultural organisations and the public sector across French and German-speaking countries and in the UK. Many pursue postgraduate study in languages, international business, European studies or related fields.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit…
