About this course

Molecular biology is the science of the molecules that underlie life: the DNA that encodes genetic information, the RNA that carries and executes it, and the proteins that perform the structural and functional work of the cell. It is a discipline at the cutting edge of biological research, concerned with how chromosomes are organised and regulated, how genes are expressed and silenced, how cells divide and differentiate, and how errors in these processes lead to cancer, genetic disease, and infection. Understanding life at the molecular level is the foundation for almost every major advance in medicine and biotechnology.

At St Andrews you will study this four-year programme full time, with a year abroad embedded in the degree. You will begin with the foundations of molecular and cellular biology before moving into specialist topics including chromosome structure and function, molecular genetics, molecular cell biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, molecular virology, and gene expression. The four-year structure allows you to develop genuine depth in the discipline, and the year abroad gives you the opportunity to study molecular biology in a different research environment, broadening your scientific perspective and your professional network.

St Andrews is a research-intensive university with strong programmes in biological sciences, and the programme connects you to active research.

Molecular biology graduates work in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, in academic and government research laboratories, in clinical genetics and genomic medicine, and in regulatory bodies. Research and development roles are a major destination, alongside positions in quality assurance, bioinformatics, medical writing, and science policy. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study, pursuing an MSc or PhD in molecular biology, genomics, biochemistry, or related fields, as the research depth of the degree provides strong preparation for doctoral work.

The degree also provides a sound basis for graduate-entry medicine or other clinical professions for those who wish to move into patient care.

Highly recommend
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On …

Genuinely worthwhile
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you share…
