About this course

Musical theatre is a performing art that demands excellence across multiple disciplines simultaneously. Unlike single-subject performance training, it asks you to develop as a singer, actor and dancer in equal measure, and then to bring those skills together in service of storytelling and character. The craft has deep roots in both theatrical tradition and popular music culture, and the contemporary industry spans the West End, national and regional touring productions, commercial entertainment, television and film.

This three-year programme at Leeds Conservatoire trains you in small groups for your practical work, giving you focused, personal tuition across the full range of performance skills the industry requires.

You will study singing, acting, movement, mime, physical theatre and voice throughout the programme, developing technical and expressive range as a performer. Dance training covers ballet, tap and jazz in its many forms, including street, commercial, lyrical and contemporary styles, reflecting the breadth of what the modern industry expects. As you progress through the programme your skills are integrated through increasingly substantial productions and performances.

In your third year you work towards full-scale public musical theatre performances, culminating in an industry showcase to which casting agents and industry professionals are invited to watch you perform, providing direct exposure to the people who make hiring decisions in the professional world.

Graduates of musical theatre training at conservatoire level typically pursue careers as professional performers in theatre, touring productions, television, and commercial entertainment. Some move into related areas such as musical direction, choreography, workshop facilitation, drama education, and community arts. The performance skills developed are also applicable to corporate entertainment, cruise work, and international productions.

For those interested in teaching, further qualifications in performing arts education offer a complementary route alongside performance work.
