Music/Theatre Studies
Music and Theatre Studies is a joint honours combination that places two performing arts disciplines in productive dialogue. Music is concerned with the creation, performance, analysis and cultural history of sound as an organised and expressive medium, encompassing everything from composition and acoustic performance to music technology, music psychology and ethnomusicology. Theatre Studies examines theatrical production as a cultural, historical and artistic form, analysing plays and performances in their historical and social contexts and asking how theatre makes meaning, communicates experience and engages its audiences.
Together, they develop graduates with a rich understanding of performance in its broadest sense.
At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme includes a year abroad and is structured to give you a range of options in both music and theatre in each year of study, allowing you to design a degree pathway that reflects your own particular interests and strengths. If you have a keen interest in the technical, cultural, historical and philosophical questions that music and theatre open up, ideally alongside some practical experience, this programme provides the rigour and flexibility to develop your interests in both directions. The year abroad enriches your understanding of musical and theatrical traditions across different national contexts.
Graduates from Music and Theatre Studies programmes go on to careers in music and the performing arts, theatre production, arts administration, education, community arts, cultural policy, broadcasting and journalism. Many develop portfolio careers that combine performance, teaching, writing and arts leadership in varied and creative ways. Further study in music, theatre, performance studies or arts management is available for those who wish to specialise, and teaching at secondary or further education level is a natural route for those who want to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for the performing arts with the next generation.
