About this course

Mental health nursing is a profession that calls for exceptional interpersonal skill, clinical knowledge, and a commitment to working with people at some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Mental health nurses support individuals experiencing conditions including depression, anxiety, psychosis, personality disorders, eating disorders, addiction, and many other presentations, across a wide range of settings from acute inpatient wards and crisis teams to community mental health services and primary care. Recovery-focused, person-centred care is at the heart of contemporary mental health nursing practice.

At Cardiff University you will study this three-year full-time programme, which is validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and leads to registration as a mental health nurse on successful completion. The typical entry tariff is 152 points. Across the three years you will develop the clinical knowledge, therapeutic skills, and professional values that registered nurses need, combining academic study with substantial practice placements in a range of mental health settings.

You will learn about psychiatric conditions and their treatment, medicines management, therapeutic communication and relationships, risk assessment, and the legal and ethical frameworks governing mental health practice. Cardiff's clinical partnerships in Wales provide access to diverse placement experiences across the full range of mental health services.

Registered mental health nurses are in sustained demand in Wales and across the UK. Career paths include inpatient psychiatric nursing, community mental health teams, crisis and home treatment teams, child and adolescent mental health services, forensic mental health, and liaison psychiatry. With experience, nurses move into specialist practitioner and advanced practice roles.

Many nurses pursue post-registration development to specialise in a particular area or to take on leadership, education, or research roles. The profession is evolving rapidly, with nurses increasingly taking on autonomous assessment and prescribing responsibilities.

Exceeded expectations
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good transp…

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to vis…
