About this course

Mental health nursing is a profession that requires both rigorous clinical knowledge and genuine human skill. Mental health nurses work with people experiencing depression, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, personality difficulties, addiction and a wide range of other conditions, in settings that span acute inpatient wards, community mental health teams, crisis services, forensic services and specialist clinics. The work demands the ability to build therapeutic relationships, assess risk, administer and monitor medications, work within multidisciplinary teams and maintain professional standards under pressure.

At Northumbria, this three-year full-time programme is designed around the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Future Nurse standards, which reflect the profession's contemporary requirements and the expectations of NHS partners who are closely involved in shaping the course. You will develop the scientific foundations of mental health nursing, including psychology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, alongside the professional skills of therapeutic communication, clinical assessment and evidence-based care planning. Clinical placements run throughout the programme, placing you in real mental health settings from early in your training and allowing you to develop competence and confidence alongside experienced practitioners.

The programme's close working relationship with NHS partners ensures that the academic content connects directly to the realities of professional practice, and that graduates are equipped to lead their profession as the NMC's standards intend.

On achieving NMC registration, graduates are qualified to work as mental health nurses across the full range of settings in the UK. Specialist areas, advanced clinical practice, research, education and leadership roles are all natural longer-term career directions. Further study at postgraduate level is supported for those who want to specialise or develop into consultant and advanced practice roles.

Highly recommend
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: early clinical exposure gave me the confidence to approach patients. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transport links …

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On t…
