About this course

Pharmacy is a science-based healthcare profession at the centre of how medicines are developed, dispensed, and used to support patient health. Pharmacists are experts in medicines, their properties, their effects in the body, and their safe and effective use, and the scope of the profession has expanded significantly in recent decades. Pharmacists now work as prescribers, as clinical specialists embedded in healthcare teams, and as practitioners delivering enhanced services that go well beyond the traditional dispensing role.

Training for pharmacy today reflects this expanding scope and demands an integration of biological sciences, chemistry, pharmacology, and clinical practice.

At Swansea this five-year full-time programme includes a foundation year for students who benefit from additional preparation before the science-intensive main degree. The programme recognises that modern healthcare is delivered by interdisciplinary teams and that pharmacists play an increasingly prominent role in clinical services across hospital, primary care, and community settings. You will study the sciences underpinning drug development and action alongside the clinical and professional skills needed to practise safely and effectively as a pharmacist.

The programme integrates sciences and practice throughout, preparing you to meet the challenges of the evolving role of pharmacy in healthcare.

Graduation from an accredited pharmacy programme, combined with the foundation training year, leads to registration as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council and the ability to practise in community, hospital, and clinical settings. The growing scope of pharmacy, including independent prescribing, clinical pharmacy in NHS trusts, and specialist roles in oncology, psychiatry, and primary care, means that career opportunities are broad and continue to expand. Some graduates also pursue careers in pharmaceutical industry research and development, regulatory affairs, or academic pharmacy research.

Many continue to postgraduate study in clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, or pharmacology.

Highly recommend
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city i…

Genuinely worthwhile
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: anatomy teaching here is particularly strong β€” full dissection experience. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city is a…
