About this course

Philosophy and Spanish is a combination that brings together two disciplines unified by a concern with clarity, argument, and the understanding of human experience across cultures. Philosophy asks fundamental questions about knowledge, morality, reality, and the nature of mind, developing the capacity for rigorous analytical thinking and careful written argument. Spanish, as one of the world's most widely spoken languages and the carrier of a rich literary and cultural heritage, gives you direct access to the thought, literature, and societies of Spain and Latin America.

The combination develops both logical precision and linguistic depth.

At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme gives you the freedom to explore the philosophical traditions that interest you most, from ancient ethics and metaphysics through to contemporary philosophy of language, mind, and political theory, while developing your Spanish to a high level across all four skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. You will engage with Spanish and Latin American literature, culture, and history alongside your language study, building genuine cultural knowledge rather than linguistic competence alone. A sandwich year in industry and a work placement are both part of the programme, giving you direct professional experience, potentially in a Spanish-speaking context, before you graduate.

With a typical entry tariff of 200 UCAS points, this degree attracts students who combine intellectual curiosity with linguistic aptitude. Graduates move into careers in law, the civil service, journalism, publishing, education, international organisations, NGOs, diplomacy, and a wide range of roles where analytical thinking and Spanish language skills are both valuable. The ability to engage with Spanish-speaking cultures at a deep level is a genuine differentiator across many international and cross-cultural professional contexts.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, Spanish, linguistics, or international relations.
