About this course

Philosophy with Spanish combines one of the oldest intellectual traditions with one of the world's most widely spoken and culturally rich languages. Philosophy asks the most fundamental questions: how do we know what we know, what is consciousness, what makes an action right or wrong, and what is the nature of political legitimacy? Spanish gives you access to a language spoken by more than 500 million people across Spain, Latin America, and beyond, and to philosophical, literary, and political traditions in the Hispanic world that have made distinctive contributions to the universal questions that philosophy addresses.

Together the two disciplines give you both a global linguistic competence and a deeply disciplined analytical mind.

At the University of York, this four-year programme includes a year abroad as stated in the title and is offered with a sandwich year in industry and work placement, giving you a combination of professional experience and international exposure that significantly enriches the programme. You will explore enduring questions about the nature of art, social justice, knowledge, and value while developing your Spanish from whatever level you begin to a high degree of proficiency. The sandwich year in industry might involve working in a Spanish-speaking context, in an organisation where philosophical skills are relevant, or in any of the many professional roles where the ability to think clearly and communicate in Spanish are both assets.

A typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects York's position as a strong research university with consistently high teaching standards.

Graduates work in law, journalism, the civil service, education, international organisations, translation, business, and any professional context where clear thinking and cross-cultural communication are valued. Postgraduate study in philosophy, Spanish, or international relations is a natural next step.

This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student…
