About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, seeking to understand the basic laws that govern matter and energy and their interactions across all scales, from the subatomic world of quarks and leptons to the large-scale structure of the universe. Its mathematical rigour and explanatory ambition have produced the greatest intellectual achievements of the modern age, including quantum mechanics, relativity, the standard model of particle physics, and our understanding of the Big Bang. Physics is not just a set of known laws: it is a method of inquiry that has proved extraordinarily generative in every domain it touches.

The University of Strathclyde offers this programme on a part-time basis, making it accessible to students who need to balance higher education with employment, family responsibilities, or other commitments. Strathclyde has a strong applied physics tradition, and the programme gives you the rigour of a full physics education delivered at a pace that suits part-time study. You will study the core areas of the discipline: classical mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, waves and optics, quantum mechanics, and the properties of matter.
