About this course

Physics is the most fundamental of the natural sciences, concerned with understanding the laws that govern matter, energy, space, and time from the subatomic to the cosmological scale. The discipline underpins modern technology, from the semiconductors in computers and smartphones to the lasers used in medicine and manufacturing, and it generates the theoretical frameworks that allow other sciences to advance. Studying physics at degree level means developing both a deep understanding of these laws and the mathematical tools to apply them in research and professional contexts.

At York, this four-year programme with a year abroad provides a thorough grounding in the core areas of physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and optics, alongside more specialist areas such as nanosystems, semiconductors, fusion plasmas, biophysics, and quantum computing. You will gain experience in experimental physics and in the computational methods increasingly central to modern research. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study at a leading international institution, experiencing a different academic culture and building international networks that can be valuable throughout a career in physics or in sectors that value physicists' analytical skills.

A sandwich year and a work placement are also incorporated, providing professional experience in industry or research settings.

Physics graduates are among the most employable in the UK because of the combination of mathematical rigour, problem-solving ability, and comfort with complex data that the degree develops. Careers in research, engineering, data science, finance, technology, healthcare, and the space and defence industries are all natural destinations. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in physics, materials science, astrophysics, or related fields, and York's strong research programme in areas including quantum technology and nanotechnology provides a rich environment for those who want to pursue doctoral research.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city with plenty to do outside of study…
