About this course

Plant and soil science addresses two of the most fundamental and interconnected foundations of life on land. Plants form the base of virtually all terrestrial food webs, producing the oxygen and organic carbon on which most life depends, while soil is the extraordinarily complex living medium in which plants grow and from which they draw water and nutrients. Understanding how plants function, how soils form and sustain fertility, and how these systems interact with one another and with the broader environment is essential for addressing some of the most pressing challenges of the twenty-first century: food security, climate change, land degradation, and the management of ecosystems under pressure.

At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year programme is the only degree in the UK to focus specifically on the relationship between plants and soil. You will study plant biology, physiology, and ecology alongside soil science, examining the chemistry, biology, and physics of soils and the complex processes by which plants and soils shape each other and the landscapes they inhabit. You will develop skills in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, data interpretation, and scientific communication, working with real samples and systems in a research-active environment.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to engage with different ecosystems, agricultural systems, and research traditions in another country. Aberdeen's location in northeast Scotland provides access to a range of agricultural, upland, and coastal environments that enrich your practical learning.

Graduates move into careers in agricultural science, environmental consultancy, soil science, plant breeding, conservation, ecology, land management, and policy roles in government and NGOs. The specific combination of plant and soil expertise is particularly valued in agriculture, food science, and environmental management, where the two areas are inseparable in practice. Postgraduate study in plant biology, agronomy, soil science, environmental science, or ecology is a natural route for those who wish to pursue research or more specialised roles.

Highly recommend
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On …

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brillian…
