About this course

Religion and theology is the academic study of human religious experience and the traditions of thought, practice and community that have developed around it. It combines the close reading of sacred texts and theological arguments with the social scientific and historical methods needed to understand religion as a living phenomenon within cultures and communities. At its best it makes you an expert at understanding how people across the globe engage with fundamental questions about meaning, morality, identity and transcendence, and why religious cultures change, conflict and persist as they do.

At the University of Bristol you will study for four years full-time, incorporating a sandwich year in professional practice and a placement component alongside a study abroad period. You will learn how cultures and individuals deal with life-shaping questions, why religious conflicts arise and how to understand religious diversity with both scholarly rigour and genuine empathy. The programme equips you to engage analytically with Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and other traditions, as well as with the secular philosophical frameworks that have developed alongside and sometimes in opposition to religious thought.

Religion and theology graduates bring skills in cross-cultural understanding, ethical reasoning, textual analysis and engagement with diverse worldviews that are valued across journalism, law, politics, publishing, education, social work, chaplaincy, NGOs and international development. The ability to understand religious motivation and practice with genuine depth is increasingly recognised as important in policy-making, healthcare, conflict resolution and community development. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in theology, religious studies, chaplaincy, Islamic studies or related disciplines, and the degree provides strong preparation for ministry training and for a wide range of professional roles that benefit from sophisticated religious literacy.

Genuinely worthwhile
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city with plenty to do …

Would do it again
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good transport …
