About this course

Religion, philosophy and ethics is a degree that addresses some of the most fundamental questions human beings have ever asked. What is real? What can we know?

How should we live? What is the relationship between faith and reason, between belief and evidence, between the sacred and the secular? These are questions that religion and philosophy have both grappled with for millennia, often in dialogue and sometimes in conflict.

Ethics draws them into the practical realm, asking how we should act in the face of genuine moral complexity, from personal decisions to the large-scale challenges of climate, justice and technology.

At Gloucestershire, this three-year full-time programme takes a particular interest in how these ideas connect to the communities and social challenges of contemporary life. In the second year, you will have the opportunity to engage in local and national placements that focus on social and climate justice in relation to religion, philosophy and ethics, which grounds the academic study in real contexts and real consequences. This practical engagement is a distinguishing feature of the programme, reflecting a belief that philosophy and religious thought are not merely academic exercises but disciplines with direct relevance to how we organise society.

You will study the major religious traditions, engage with the history and methods of philosophy, and develop your capacity for ethical reasoning across a range of applied contexts. Writing and argumentation skills are central to the degree, and you will graduate as someone who can construct and evaluate complex arguments, engage with diverse perspectives and think carefully about how ideas translate into action.

Graduates move into education, the ministry and religious life, public sector roles, charity and voluntary sector work, journalism, ethics consultancy, law, social research and policy. Further study in philosophy, theology, ethics or law is a natural progression.
