About this course

Sociology is the systematic study of human social life, from the intimate dynamics of families and friendships to the structural forces of class, race, gender, and globalisation that shape entire societies. It is a discipline that trains you to see the social world with new eyes, to question assumptions that seem natural, and to ask why the world is arranged as it is rather than some other way. In doing so, sociology develops some of the most transferable intellectual skills available: the ability to gather and interpret evidence, to construct arguments from competing theories, and to communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively.

This four-year full-time programme at the University of East Anglia includes a year abroad, taking your studies into an international context that enriches both your understanding of sociology and your sense of how different societies organise themselves. You will study the foundational thinkers and concepts of the discipline, including class, inequality, power, identity, institutions, and social change, as well as more applied areas such as health and illness, crime and deviance, media and culture, and globalisation. Research methods, including both quantitative survey analysis and qualitative approaches such as interviewing and ethnography, are developed throughout the programme.

UEA has a strong tradition in social sciences, and the programme benefits from a research-active faculty engaged with contemporary social questions.

Sociology graduates pursue careers across a wide range of fields, including social research, policy analysis, journalism, education, social work, human resources, marketing, public health, and the voluntary sector. The ability to think critically about society, to work with data, and to communicate findings clearly is valued by employers in almost every sector. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, public health, social research methods, or the law, and the programme provides a strong academic foundation for any of these routes.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local cost of livin…
