About this course

Software engineering is the discipline of building reliable, maintainable and scalable software systems. Where computer science focuses on theoretical foundations, software engineering is concerned with the craft and process of creating software that works in the real world, on real projects, for real users. It draws on algorithms, data structures and mathematical reasoning, but it also demands skills in design, testing, collaboration and project management.

As digital systems become central to every sector of the economy, the demand for software engineers with both technical depth and professional competence continues to grow.

At Teesside, this three-year full-time programme builds your skills from first principles, ensuring that you understand the mathematics and algorithms that underpin computing before applying them in practical contexts. You will develop programming proficiency across relevant languages and platforms, study software design and architecture, work with databases and networks, and engage with the processes that professional software development teams use to deliver complex systems. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, which is a defining feature: you will spend structured time working in industry, gaining the professional experience that makes a meaningful difference when you graduate into a competitive job market.

Graduates in software engineering are among the most in-demand of any discipline. Roles in software development, full-stack engineering, systems architecture, DevOps, quality assurance, data engineering and technical product management are all within reach. The skills transfer well across sectors, and graduates work in technology companies, financial services, healthcare technology, gaming, public sector digital services and beyond.

Many graduates progress quickly into senior technical roles, and some move into postgraduate study or research in areas such as machine learning, cybersecurity or advanced software systems.
