About this course

Spanish and comparative literature is a combination that develops both a deep engagement with the Spanish-speaking world and the analytical tools to compare literary traditions across languages, cultures, and historical periods. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language on Earth by native speakers, central to the cultures of Spain and twenty Latin American nations, and studied seriously it opens a literary tradition of extraordinary richness. Comparative literature extends your perspective, asking what can be learned by reading across literary traditions and what techniques and themes transcend particular linguistic boundaries.

At the University of Glasgow, Spanish is taught by staff who cover a wide range of topics and include native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world, giving the language teaching a breadth and authenticity that enriches your engagement with the diversity within Spanish-speaking cultures. You will develop your language to a high level while studying Spanish and Latin American literature, film, and cultural history, and the comparative literature strand develops your ability to read across traditions with both analytical precision and cultural sensitivity.

The programme runs over five years full time and includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities. The typical entry tariff is 216 UCAS points.

Graduates from Spanish and comparative literature programmes go on to careers in translation and interpreting, academia, publishing, education, journalism, the civil service, international business, and cultural organisations. The depth of literary and linguistic formation the programme provides is particularly valued in roles that require genuine engagement with Spanish-speaking cultures. Further study at postgraduate level in Spanish, Latin American studies, comparative literature, or translation is a natural route.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city — local c

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city — good transport links make it easy t
