About this course

Sport and exercise science applies the principles of physiology, psychology, and biomechanics to understand human physical performance and health. The discipline bridges laboratory science and applied practice, using rigorous methods to investigate how the body responds to training, how psychological factors influence athletic performance, and how movement can be optimised across different populations from elite athletes to the general public seeking the health benefits of physical activity.

The University of Stirling's four-year full-time degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution in another country. Stirling has a strong tradition in sport science, with a campus that includes high-quality sports facilities and research connections to elite sport and public health. The year abroad enriches your academic development and reflects the international nature of contemporary sport science practice and research.

You will study exercise physiology, sport psychology, biomechanics, strength and conditioning, nutrition, research methods, and the statistical and analytical skills needed to work with physiological and performance data. The four-year structure allows the programme to cover both the breadth of the discipline and a deeper engagement with specialist topics, and the year abroad extends your learning into international academic and sporting contexts.

Graduates in sport and exercise science go on to work as sport scientists, performance analysts, strength and conditioning coaches, exercise physiologists, fitness consultants, and health promotion specialists. Many continue to postgraduate study in physiotherapy, sports medicine, coaching science, or strength and conditioning, and some pursue doctoral research in exercise physiology or sport psychology. Stirling's established connections with Scottish and UK sport provide additional pathways into elite and professional sport organisations.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good transport links …
