About this course

Sports performance as a subject sits at the intersection of physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, and coaching science, asking how athletes develop, what limits their performance, and what interventions, training, nutrition, recovery, and psychological preparation, can help them perform to their potential. It is a discipline that is both scientifically rigorous and practically grounded, drawing on evidence from exercise science and translating it into real-world applications for coaches, athletes, and sports organisations.

At the University of Bath, one of the UK's most prestigious universities for sport and one with a world-class performance environment on campus, this two-year full-time programme is designed for students who already have significant sports science or related knowledge and want to develop their expertise at a higher level in a focused, intensive format. Bath's unique position as home to national training centres and elite athletes means the academic study of performance is conducted in an environment where performance itself is constantly being pursued and refined. The typical entry tariff of 136 points reflects the programme's expectation of students who bring prior knowledge and strong academic ability to this demanding two-year course.

You will study the physiological and biomechanical demands of performance across different sports, the psychology of elite competition, talent development, training theory and periodisation, injury prevention and management, and the evidence base for performance interventions. The programme develops both your analytical skills and your ability to apply scientific knowledge practically to performance settings. Graduates go on to work as strength and conditioning coaches, sports scientists, performance analysts, physiologists in elite sport, and sports development specialists in clubs, national governing bodies, universities, and commercial performance settings.

Many also pursue postgraduate study in sports science, physiology, or high performance, deepening their expertise for more senior professional roles.
