About this course

Sports journalism sits at the intersection of two things that command enormous public attention: sport and the media that covers it. It requires the storytelling and investigative instincts of a journalist alongside a deep engagement with sport as a cultural and social phenomenon. The best sports journalists do more than report results.

They find the human stories behind the headlines, hold powerful institutions to account, and help audiences understand sport in its full complexity.

At York St John this three-year full-time degree is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council, a mark of the programme's professional quality and industry relevance. You will develop the core skills of journalism, including reporting, interviewing, script-writing, audio and video production, and digital content creation, in an environment focused specifically on sport. You will be immersed in the world of sports journalism from the outset, preparing you to report on events of all kinds, from local club competitions to iconic international occasions.

The programme includes a sandwich year that places you in a professional setting, a year abroad for those who take that route, and work placement opportunities that are woven into the degree structure, all of which build your portfolio and professional network while you are still studying.

You will develop an understanding of the sports industry itself, the economics, politics, and culture of sport as a global business, which gives your journalism a richer foundation. Technical media skills are developed alongside editorial and critical thinking, so that you can produce content across multiple platforms.

Graduates from Sports Journalism go into roles in broadcast journalism, digital sports media, print and online sports reporting, content production, public relations for sports organisations, and commentary. The BJTC accreditation strengthens your standing with employers who recognise the programme's professional standards. Postgraduate study in journalism or media is also an option for those who want to develop specialised expertise.

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good transport links make i…

Solid, with caveats
Would I choose it again? Probably yes, with caveats. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit other UK cit…
