Here's the honest picture on this course - what you'd study, whether you'd likely get in, what it pays, and where it leads. Everything's real data.
About this course

Theoretical physics is the branch of physics concerned with developing mathematical frameworks to describe and predict the behaviour of the physical world, from the subatomic to the cosmological. While experimental physics tests hypotheses against measurement, theoretical physics constructs the theories themselves: the equations of general relativity, quantum field theory, string theory, statistical mechanics and condensed matter theory that describe reality at levels where direct observation is difficult or impossible. It is an intellectually demanding discipline that requires exceptional mathematical ability and the willingness to pursue ideas into unfamiliar and often counter-intuitive territory.

At Liverpool, this four-year programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and engage with theoretical physics research and teaching in a different academic environment. You will study the core areas of physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical physics, before progressing to the more advanced theoretical content of quantum field theory, particle physics, cosmology, general relativity and advanced mathematical methods. The mathematical demands of the programme are substantial, and you will develop a high level of mathematical fluency alongside your physical understanding.

Liverpool has active research in theoretical particle physics and cosmology. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points.

Theoretical physics graduates move into academic research, postgraduate study in theoretical or mathematical physics, data science, financial modelling, quantitative analysis, technology, computing and engineering. The extraordinary analytical and mathematical training that theoretical physics provides is recognised as some of the most demanding and valuable graduate preparation available, and graduates are consistently sought by employers in quantitative roles across many sectors. Many also pursue doctoral research in theoretical physics, mathematics or related fields.

Would do it again
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good transport links…
