About this course

Tourism and events management are two of the most dynamic sectors of the global economy, each requiring a combination of commercial acumen, logistical competence, and the ability to create experiences that people will remember. Tourism management is concerned with how destinations, accommodation, transport, and visitor experiences are planned, marketed, and operated. Events management addresses the planning and execution of gatherings from conferences and festivals to sporting events and exhibitions.

Both sectors involve working under pressure with complex logistics and diverse stakeholders.

At the University of Sunderland, this two-year full-time programme is designed to develop expertise quickly, giving you the key knowledge and practical insights needed for a career in these fast-paced industries. You will study the structure and economics of tourism and events, destination marketing, event planning and operations, visitor management, and the financial and legal aspects of running events and tourism businesses. The programme emphasises practical skills alongside theoretical understanding, preparing you for roles that are immediate and operational as well as strategic.

The accelerated two-year structure suits students who want to progress into employment or further study efficiently, building a solid professional grounding in a shorter timeframe than a standard three-year degree. Sunderland's programme provides insights into both industries, recognising that many organisations operate across both and that the skills developed in one translate readily to the other.

Graduates move into careers in event planning and management, destination management organisations, hotel and hospitality management, conference and venue management, travel and tourism operations, and arts and cultural venue management. Many begin in coordinator or assistant roles and progress to senior management as experience accumulates. Some go on to further study in hospitality management, marketing, or event management.
