About this course

Web development and security is a degree that prepares you for two of the most essential and interconnected roles in the modern digital economy. Web development is the discipline of designing and building the applications, platforms, and services that run on the internet, from front-end user interfaces to back-end server logic and databases. Security is the discipline of ensuring that those systems are resistant to attack, that data is protected, and that the growing range of digital threats facing organisations and individuals is understood and managed.

Understanding both is essential in a world where almost every organisation depends on internet-connected systems and where those systems are under constant pressure from malicious actors.

At Aberystwyth University, this three-year full-time programme addresses the central importance of the internet to modern organisations, equipping you to both construct effective internet solutions and to understand the networks on which they run. You will study web programming, database design, network architecture, software engineering, and the security principles and techniques that protect systems and data, including cryptography, ethical hacking, and the analysis and mitigation of web application vulnerabilities. The programme develops both your practical skills in building web-based systems and your understanding of the security considerations that must be built into them from the outset, rather than added as an afterthought.

Graduates go on to careers as web developers, full-stack developers, web application security specialists, network security engineers, and penetration testers across a wide range of organisations. The demand for professionals who understand both web development and security is strong and growing, as organisations recognise that security expertise must be embedded in development teams rather than separated from them. Postgraduate study in cyber security, software engineering, or related computing fields is another route, and the combination of practical development and security skills the degree provides gives graduates a distinctive profile in a competitive job market.
