Art History and German

Art history and German is a pairing that connects the rigorous study of visual culture with deep engagement with one of Europe's most significant literary and intellectual traditions. Art history trains you to analyse the history, context, style, and meaning of images and objects, developing visual literacy and engaging with critical approaches and theoretical frameworks that illuminate how art and visual culture function in questions of aesthetics, politics, power, and identity. German connects you to the language and culture of a nation that has been at the centre of European art, philosophy, and intellectual life for centuries, from the Reformation and the Romantic movement to the Bauhaus and contemporary German art.

At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time degree develops both disciplines with the depth that a combined programme allows. You will study art history across a range of periods and media, exploring how images and objects have reflected and shaped human history and experience, and you will develop the visual literacy to engage critically with diverse forms of artistic production. The German component gives you high-level language skills alongside immersion in German cultural, literary, and intellectual history, opening access to a vast tradition of writing about art and to the German-speaking museum and gallery world.

A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study and live in a German-speaking country and to engage with European art history in the settings where much of it is held and exhibited.

The combination of art historical knowledge and German language and cultural competence positions you exceptionally well for careers in the European and international art world.

Graduates go on to careers in museums, galleries, auction houses, cultural journalism, publishing, arts administration, education, and the heritage sector, with particular opportunities in German-speaking contexts. Many pursue postgraduate study in art history, museum studies, or German cultural studies.
