The role
As a theatre nurse, you are part of the surgical team in an operating room. Before surgery starts, you prepare everything - checking that all the instruments are clean and laying them out. During surgery, you hand the surgeon what they need and watch the patient carefully to spot any problems.
The work is fast and you must concentrate hard because one mistake can matter. You work with surgeons, anaesthetists and other nurses and need to know what they need before they ask. After surgery you help move the patient safely and make sure the theatre is cleaned and ready for the next operation.
Daily responsibilities
- Prepare the operating theatre by ensuring all necessary surgical instruments and equipment are sterile and ready for use.
- Assist the surgical team during procedures by providing the appropriate instruments and anticipating the needs of the surgeons.
- Monitor patients' vital signs and overall condition throughout the surgical process, responding swiftly to any changes.
- Educate patients and their families about the surgical process, recovery expectations, and post-operative care.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of surgeries, including patient data and surgical outcomes.
- Collaborate with anaesthetists to ensure safe and effective anaesthesia management.
- Participate in regular training and professional development to stay updated on the latest surgical techniques and protocols.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, infection control standards, and hospital policies.
