Environmental Science and Geography

Environmental science and geography together provide a comprehensive approach to understanding the planet we live on and the human pressures that are changing it. Environmental science focuses on the physical, chemical, and biological systems that sustain life on earth, including climate, water, soil, atmosphere, and the ecosystems that depend on them. Geography connects those physical processes to the human dimensions of environment, asking how people have shaped and been shaped by the natural world and how the spatial organisation of society relates to environmental conditions and challenges.

At Dundee you will study the natural science of the environment alongside the human geography of how people interact with it. Environmental science modules will develop your understanding of ecology, hydrology, atmospheric science, geochemistry, and the methods used to monitor and analyse environmental change. Geography modules will engage you with physical processes, spatial analysis, climate science, environmental policy, and the social and economic dimensions of sustainability.

You will develop practical skills in fieldwork, data collection and analysis, geographic information systems, and the use of scientific instruments and methods in environmental study. The four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study environmental and geographical questions in a different national context and to develop a more comparative perspective on global environmental challenges.

Graduates go on to careers in environmental consultancy, government environmental agencies, conservation, urban and rural planning, climate science, water and energy utilities, environmental education, and research. Many continue to postgraduate study in environmental science, geography, climate change, or environmental management.
