Animal Biology

Animal biology is the scientific study of the animal kingdom in all its extraordinary diversity, from the simplest invertebrates to the most behaviourally complex mammals. It encompasses the physiology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and behaviour of animals, asking how animal bodies work, how species have evolved and diversified, how animals interact with each other and with their environments, and how human activities are affecting animal populations and ecosystems worldwide. The discipline sits within the broader biological sciences and connects to conservation, veterinary medicine, agriculture, and biomedical research.

At Nottingham Trent University, this four-year programme includes a foundation year that provides a supported transition into degree-level biological science. The foundation year is designed for students who have the interest and aptitude for animal biology but who need to build or consolidate their background in biological and chemical sciences before beginning the main programme. From the main programme onwards, you will study animal biology across its core areas, including anatomy and physiology, animal behaviour and ecology, evolutionary biology, genetics, and conservation.

You will develop strong laboratory and fieldwork skills alongside the ability to critically evaluate scientific evidence and to communicate scientific findings clearly. Nottingham Trent has a strong practical orientation and good connections to conservation, zoological, and animal science organisations.

Graduates in animal biology go on to careers in conservation and wildlife management, zoological collections, animal welfare, veterinary science (with further training), agricultural science, research, science education, and environmental consultancy. The analytical and practical skills developed through the programme are also transferable to a range of roles in the life sciences sector more broadly. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study, including research degrees in ecology, animal behaviour, conservation biology, or related fields.
