Geography

Geography is the discipline that sits at the boundary between the natural and social sciences, examining how physical environments and human societies interact, shape each other, and change over time. It develops a distinctive spatial awareness, the ability to understand the world through the lens of place and process and to connect local observations to global systems. Geography addresses some of the most urgent contemporary challenges: climate change, resource management, urbanisation, inequality, migration, and the governance of shared environments all require geographical understanding to analyse properly and address effectively.

At the University of Plymouth, this three-year full-time Geography programme includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation before engaging with degree-level content, alongside a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities. The foundation year builds the scientific, social scientific, and analytical skills needed for the main degree. Plymouth's south-west coastal setting provides exceptional opportunities for fieldwork in both coastal and upland environments.

You will investigate societal issues using cutting-edge technologies including virtual reality, urban fieldwork, and GIS mapping, developing the practical and conceptual training that enables human geographers to engage with global challenges. The year abroad adds an international perspective, and the sandwich year provides professional experience in a relevant environmental, planning, or research context.

You will develop skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods, GIS and spatial analysis, fieldwork, data interpretation, and scientific and academic writing.

Graduates from geography programmes pursue careers in urban and regional planning, environmental management, sustainability consultancy, international development, government policy, GIS analysis, research, and education. Postgraduate study in geography, planning, environmental management, or development studies is a natural continuation.
