About this course

Molecular cell biology is the science of life at its most fundamental level, examining the processes that occur within and between cells and the molecular mechanisms by which genetic information is stored, expressed and regulated. The discipline sits at the frontier of our understanding of health and disease, as the molecular and cellular basis of cancer, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular disease and many other conditions becomes progressively better understood. The knowledge generated by molecular cell biologists has driven the development of targeted therapies, diagnostics and gene-editing technologies that are transforming medicine.

At the University of York you will engage with the latest biological research into cancer and other degenerative diseases, learning how model systems are used to understand disease mechanisms and develop new treatments for human conditions. You will study cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and the experimental techniques, including microscopy, molecular cloning, genomics and protein analysis, that are central to research in this field. The programme runs full time over three years and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work-placement experience, giving you substantial laboratory and professional experience in research or industry settings alongside your academic studies.

You will develop strong practical laboratory skills alongside theoretical understanding, the ability to design and interpret experiments rigorously, and the scientific communication skills needed to present your findings in written and oral forms. The research environment at York is strong, and students benefit from engagement with active research groups.

Graduates from molecular cell biology programmes move into careers in biomedical research, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, clinical laboratory sciences, science communication and education. Many also pursue postgraduate research, which is the standard route into senior positions in academic and industrial research. Postgraduate study in molecular biology, cancer biology, genetics or biotechnology is a natural progression.
