University is one door, not the only one

Objectives (Gatsby 2 & 4 aligned)

  • Students can name the four routes into work at 16: A levels, T Levels, BTECs and Level 3 apprenticeships.
  • Students can say how many Level 3 apprenticeship standards exist right now, and that each one carries the same AI exposure measurement as a degree course.
  • Students can name one subject area with several Level 3 standards, and one specific role inside it.

The activity (8 to 10 minutes)

  1. Project whatcareer.net/en/yellow/study and read the four routes aloud.
  2. Each group picks one subject area below, opens whatcareer.net/en/yellow/apprenticeships?level=3, and finds one real standard's title and AI score.
  3. Groups report back: standard name, subject area, AI score. Compare scores across the room.

The four routes

  • A levels: usually three subjects at sixth form. The most flexible choice for a student still deciding.
  • T Levels: one technical subject, two years, with a 45-day industry placement built in.
  • BTECs and applied courses: coursework-heavy and practical, at school or college.
  • Level 3 apprenticeships: a real job with training, paid from day one, A-level equivalent at the end.

  • 304 Level 3 apprenticeship standards are live right now; Engineering and manufacturing carries the most, at 97. Why might one subject area carry so many more standards than another?
  • An A level keeps every subject open a little longer; a Level 3 apprenticeship commits to one from day one, paid. What would a student need to know about themselves before choosing the second over the first?
  • Every standard above carries the same AI exposure measurement as a university course. Does “not university” mean “less measured”, or “measured the same way”?
