French and Ukrainian is a language combination with both intellectual richness and striking contemporary relevance. French is one of the world's major languages, spoken on every inhabited continent and used in international diplomacy, commerce, science, and culture. It opens access to one of the great literary and intellectual traditions in European history, as well as to the diverse cultures of Francophone Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond. Ukrainian is a Slavic language with a distinct and important literary tradition, and given Ukraine's position at the centre of European politics and international attention, the ability to engage with Ukrainian language and culture carries a significance that extends well beyond linguistics.
